  1、perplex


  perplex是及(ji)物动词,意为(wei)“使(shi)…困惑,使(shi)…费解”。


  The disease has continued to perplex doctors.


  这(zhei)种疾病(bing)仍然困(kun)扰着(zhe)医生。


  she was perplexed by her husband's moodiness.


  她对丈夫的闷(men)闷(men)不乐感(gan)到困惑不解(jie)。


  2、persecute


  persecute是动词,意为“迫害”,通常(chang)指政治或宗(zong)教(jiao)上的(de)。名词形(xing)式为persecution。


  Throughout history, people have been persecuted for their religious beliefs.


  人们因(yin)宗教信仰(yang)而受迫害的情况(kuang)贯(guan)穿了整个(ge)历史。


  The Puritans left England to escape being persecuted.


  清教徒离开了英格兰以躲避迫害。


  We had to leave the country because of the persecutions.

  3、persevere


  persevere是(shi)(shi)不(bu)及物(wu)动词,意(yi)为“坚持不(bu)懈,锲而不(bu)舍(she)”,是(shi)(shi)个褒义词。如(ru)果要(yao)(yao)跟(gen)宾语,则要(yao)(yao)用搭配persevere with sth或者persevere in (doing) sth。


  It looks as if the policy will be a success, providing that the government perseveres and does not give in to its critics.


  看来如果政(zheng)府锲而不(bu)舍(she)不(bu)向批评(ping)家屈服,这项政(zheng)策就有可能(neng)成功。


  She persevered with her violin lessons.


  她孜孜不倦地学习(xi)小(xiao)提(ti)琴。


  The education director is persevering in his attempt to obtain additional funding for the school.

  4、persist


  persist是常(chang)(chang)用动词(ci),意为(wei)”坚持,执(zhi)意“,常(chang)(chang)用的搭配(pei)为(wei)persist in (doing) sth或者persist with sth。


  The government is persisting with its ambitious public works programme.


  政(zheng)府坚持实施其雄心勃勃的市政(zheng)工程规划(hua)。


  He persisted in his refusal to admit responsibility.


  他(ta)坚(jian)持不承(cheng)认负有责任。


  5、personality


  personality是(shi)个(ge)常见名词,指(zhi)(zhi)人的“性(xing)格,个(ge)性(xing)”或(huo)者指(zhi)(zhi)物的“特征”,还可以指(zhi)(zhi)“名人,风(feng)云人物”。


  She has such a kind, friendly personality.


  她(ta)个(ge)性(xing)善良友(you)好。


  The problem with many modern buildings is that they lack personality.


  许多现代建筑物(wu)的问题(ti)在(zai)于(yu)缺乏特色。


  The show is hosted by a popular TV personality.


  该(gai)节目由一位广受欢迎的电视名人主持(chi)。


  6、personnel


  personnel是(shi)(shi)名(ming)词(ci)(ci),指(zhi)公(gong)司、组(zu)织或军队中(zhong)的“人(ren)员,职员”,它(ta)是(shi)(shi)集合(he)名(ming)词(ci)(ci),本身(shen)就是(shi)(shi)复数。personnel还可以指(zhi)人(ren)事部,相当于personnel department。


  Five other US military personnel were killed in various incidents.


  另有5名美(mei)军士(shi)兵死于各种(zhong)意外。


  The new director is likely to make major changes in personnel.


  新主管(guan)可能会在人事上做出大(da)变动。


  She works in personnel.

  7、perspective


  perspective是名词(ci),指看(kan)待问题的“角度(du),观点”,写作(zuo)中很(hen)常(chang)用。


  Most guidebook history is written from the editor's perspective.


  大部(bu)分指南书中的历史(shi)是从编辑的角度(du)来写的。


  I would like to offer a historical perspective.


  我想(xiang)从历(li)史的角(jiao)度来谈一下。


  His experience abroad provides a wider perspective on the problem.


  他(ta)在国外的(de)经历使他(ta)以更广阔的(de)视角看待这个(ge)问题。


  8、persuade


  persuade是个常见的基础动(dong)词(ci),它有两个意思。


  第一,意为(wei)(wei)“说服,劝服”某人,常用搭配(pei)为(wei)(wei)persuade sb to do sth或者persuade sb into (doing) sth。


  If she doesn't want to go, nothing you can say will persuade her.


  如果她不想去(qu),你说什么也劝不动她的。


  We're trying to persuade manufacturers to sell them here.


  我们正在努力劝说(shuo)制造(zao)商在这里销售(shou)。


  Her legal advisers persuaded her into mentioning the names of the people involved in the robbery.


  她的(de)法律顾问劝她说出涉入(ru)抢劫(jie)的(de)人(ren)员姓名。


  第二,意为“使…相(xiang)信,信服”,常用搭配为persuade sb of sth或者persuade sb (that),同义(yi)词为convince,两者搭配用法完全一样(yang)。


  She must persuade the jury of her innocence.


  他必须让陪审团相(xiang)信(xin)她是无辜的。


  It will be difficult to persuade them that there's no other choice.


  很难(nan)让他们(men)相信别(bie)无选择。


  9、pest /pest/


  pest是常见名词,意为“害虫,害兽(shou)”。

  Greenfly and slugs are two common garden pests.


  蚜虫(chong)和蛞(kuo)蝓(yu)是两种(zhong)常(chang)见的园圃害(hai)虫(chong)。


  10、petition


  petition有两个意思,都(dou)是(shi)作名(ming)词(ci)和动词(ci)都(dou)可以。


  第(di)一,名词指“请愿(yuan),请愿(yuan)书”,动词就是“请求,请愿(yuan)”。


  They wanted me to sign a petition against experiments on animals.


  他们(men)想让我(wo)在一份(fen)反对用(yong)动物做实验的请愿书(shu)上签名(ming)。


  All the attempts to petition the Congress had failed.


  所有(you)向国会请愿的努力(li)均告失败。


  第二,名(ming)词(ci)指向法院(yuan)(yuan)提(ti)交的“诉状,申诉书”,动词(ci)就是(shi)“向法院(yuan)(yuan)申诉”。


  She is threatening to file a petition for divorce.


  她在(zai)威(wei)胁说要提出离婚诉讼。


  The defendant’s lawyer petitioned for a new trial.


  被告(gao)律师(shi)请求重新开庭(ting)审理。
