  There is a half-spilt bottle of wine lying on the ground; a young man watching it cries, "It's empty!" while another witness happily states: "Luckily, there is some left." The vivid cartoon illustrates how human nature differs. When faced with a problem, some are optimistic and some are pessimistic.


  The optimist remains hopeful because he or she pays attention to the bright side-what is left in the bottle. Such people usually choose to continue an undertaking, overcoming a difficulty and facing what might come next: They are bound to succeed in the end. By contrast, the pessimist is consumed with negative emotion because he or she sees only the dark side-what is spilt on the ground. They are more likely to give up when faced with trouble: Seldom can they taste the fruits of success.


  Setbacks are an inseparable accompaniment to life. As it is, instead of yielding setbacks, we would do better to accept them and figure out why they have occurred. Only in this way can we succeed.
